Some neighbor kids shared some of their Dad’s porn stash with me. I was only about 14 years old. Of course I liked it. We giggled, we bragged about it and before long I couldn’t stop looking at it. I never, ever imagined it would become addicting. That thought never crossed my mind.

Pornography addiction. It just didn’t sound like a real thing. People are addicted to drugs or alcohol or something else. But pornography? I didn’t even know it was possible to have a pornography addiction.

A major component in the recovery process is reprogramming our autopilot–the habitual behaviors we have developed over the years. From the time I was nine-years-old, my actions involving unhealthy sexuality steadily increased in frequency and intensity. Over time, those consistently repeated behaviors programmed my brain to operate without “thinking” about it. Any habit can be changed, but some are more engrained into the mind than others and require greater diligence in the reprogramming process.

After decades of helping individuals work through their addiction to pornography, I’m still amazed by the consistency of the responses I see in both the addict and those who care about him or her. When one is shackled in porn use, he or she is usually deeply frustrated and greatly perplexed by the power of their addiction–especially by the fact that when they feel the “urge” wash over them, they temporarily jettison everyone and everything they care about to indulge in porn or some other sexual behavior. Afterward, they can’t understand why their will power and self-discipline were so weak! At the same time, those who care about the addict feel tremendous frustration each time he or she gives in to the addiction–”Why can’t you just say no!” “You just need to learn to control yourself!”
